Tribe

The Stories Behind the Songs

“Tribe” is the latest release from Bonfire Dub and a song that has helped me find the positive elements of a situation I struggle to embrace. The song is inspired by the recent election and current political divide in America. Additionally, I was given the book Tribe by Sebastian Junger and concurrently the themes resonated in my mind. As a global traveler, seeking the uncomfortable situations that land me in honest and authentic conversation, I have learned to tame passion fueled dialog with empathy. I have sat with Shepherds and debated America’s hegemonic intentions, the role of religion and cultural norms in forgotten lands. These and similar conversations have opened my heart and ears to a path that allows driven debate, yet empathetic resolve.

In my own beautiful country, filled with deeply passionate, entrepreneurial and spiritual humans, I was finding this debate constantly tainted with anger, agenda, and fear. How did we get to this place? Why can’t we debate and discuss without the hatred? As I pondered these questions and listened to views contrasting my own beliefs from some of the people closest to me, I decided to do what I could to inspire more thoughtful exchange.

The lyrics are meant to open a path to discussion that deepens your own self-awareness. Walking in another man’s shoes is the only way to enter the conversation and feel another’s perspective. Our democracy was founded on heated and fiery debate, but seeking the best path forward, without agenda and only towards a positive outcome for all. With “Tribe” I hope to lead this movement by example! When I play the song live I often get approached following the show by people on both sides of the political isle thanking me for showing them a thread forward, that helps them open the delicate speech and shines a light on the true way forward.

My brother, tell me what you think
My sister, may I walk in your world?
My father, never taught to look away
My Mother, you’re why I am this way
And I will never look away

My lover, all I need is your hand
My teacher, simplify so we can understand
My Father, never taught to look away
My Mother, you’re why i am this way
And I will never look away

Chorus
When I don’t want to leave, I have arrived
When you don’t want to go, you have arrived
When I don’t, don’t want to go, I have arrived, we have arrived
When you don’t want to go home, you have arrived
Welcome to the Tribe

My rotesting friends, are we seeking the truth
Humility, lets is soak our roots, bathe our roots
My father, never taught to look away
My Mother, Mother Earth, you’re why I am this way
And I will never look away

Welcome to the Tribe
Welcome to the Tribe
Welcome to the Tribe
Welcome to the Tribe
